Security research plays a critical role in shaping a safer future. Yet, its true value is only realized when research outcomes move beyond theory and become operational—delivering tangible impact where it matters most.
On 7-8th April, this principle was at the heart of the Europol Innovation Lab Annual Networking and Alignment Meeting for Horizon Europe projects in The Hague. Under the theme “From Vision to Impact,” the event brought together security research initiatives from across the European Union, all working toward a common goal: transforming innovative ideas into practical solutions.
For BEHOLDER partners DISSS, in collaboration with Sioux Technologies, the meeting provided an excellent opportunity to showcase ongoing efforts within the project. Our initiative focuses on strengthening CBRN-E (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives) resilience in urban environments—an area of growing importance as cities face increasingly complex security challenges. By bridging research and real-world application, BEHOLDER aims to equip authorities and stakeholders with tools and insights that enhance preparedness and response capabilities.
Initiatives such as STARLIGHT-H2020, the CYCLOPES – Cybercrime Law Enforcement Practitioners’ Network and the maritime trafficking core group stemming from MARIT-D were recognized by the Europol Innovation Lab as examples of research successfully translated into operational value.
These moments of continuity underline an important truth: impactful security innovation is not created in isolation. It is built through sustained collaboration, knowledge sharing, and a commitment to turning insights into action. By connecting the research community, security practitioners, policymakers and technology, the gap between vision and impact can be closed.
As the European security ecosystem continues to evolve, events like this reinforce the importance of staying connected, aligned and focused on outcomes. Moving from vision to impact cannot be achieved in a single day—it is an ongoing process that defines the success of security research as a whole.
